Dr. Soumyadip Panja

I was always struck by the ricocheting lights from the surface of a flowing river which left me wondering about the aquatic underworld since childhood. During my post-graduation in Zoology from the University of Calcutta, I have developed a sheer interest in ecology and the conservation of vast living resources. I became more inquisitive and empathetic toward biodiversity loss and distorting ecosystems.

With such an urge, I pursued my predoctoral research on the exclusive riverscape of the sub-Himalayan Terai-Dooars ecoregion of Eastern Himalayas. My emphasis was on the diverse stream fishes and their ecology to build coarse and fine filter conservation measures considering the advancing human footprint and climate change. Besides I have also collaborated on research on niche conservatism of estuarine fishes and microbial diversity of brachyuran crabs of Indian Sundarbans. After submitting my thesis, I have been associated with the range-wide estimation of the River Dolphin exercise with the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. Later, I joined the Fish Ecology and Behaviour Lab as an IISER-Kolkata post-doctoral fellow where my research expertise is being more sharpened to comparatively investigate hierarchical structure in the freshwater fish community of varied ecosystems across India.

I have always loved teaching and grooming young minds; therefore, took pleasure in graduate and master's students' training and teaching sessions. In my spare time, either I would pack my photography gears and leave for hills or indulge in fictional literature and gardening at home. Being a believer, my prayers have always dwelled in training in Rabindra-sangeet and Hindustani-classical vocals.
